Protect legibility everywhere

The color contrast checker scores WCAG contrast on hex colors to keep accessibility strong for text over images and small captions.

It flags ink coverage concerns for print readability while preserving your brand palette.

Built for designers and prepress

Review legibility and run a color blindness check, then pair with the RGB to CMYK preview and DPI checker before exporting.

Share and move to production

Export the scores as part of your prepress checklist, send files to the file uploader, or order business cards with confidence.

Frequently asked questions

What WCAG level should I target?

WCAG AA requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal-sized body text and 3:1 for large text above 18 points. For most printed materials including flyers, brochures, and postcards ordered through Cheap RUSH Printing, AA compliance is the right target to ensure legibility for the widest audience. AAA compliance at 7:1 is worth pursuing for small captions or fine print where readability is especially critical.

Does this handle gradients?

Gradients do not have a single contrast ratio because their color changes across the element. To check a gradient effectively, sample the lightest and darkest hex values from the range where text will appear and test each one separately. The color contrast checker gives you the ratio for any pair of hex values, so testing multiple points across the gradient ensures text remains readable everywhere it overlaps in your print design.

Will contrast change in print?

Yes, printed color always differs from what you see on screen because ink on paper absorbs light rather than emitting it. Glossy coatings can boost apparent contrast while uncoated stocks tend to look slightly flatter. Use the RGB to CMYK preview alongside the color contrast checker to simulate how your hex color pairs will behave on press before ordering flyers, postcards, or brochures through Cheap RUSH Printing.

Can I share results?

Yes, the color contrast checker lets you download a score summary that includes the tested hex values, contrast ratio, and WCAG pass or fail status. Attach this document to your prepress checklist for sign-off before submitting files to Cheap RUSH Printing. Sharing scores with clients or internal stakeholders during the review stage prevents contrast problems from being discovered after the print run is already complete.

Can your team do this for me instead of using the online tool?

Yes. The browser tool is free and private, but if you would rather not rely on it alone, upload your files via our complimentary file uploader and request Human + AI help with “Contrast”. Our prepress team will review manually — with AI assistance — and reply for free.
