Control ink early

The ink coverage estimator measures ink coverage and percentage coverage on every page.

It flags total ink limit risks, solid fill blocks, and where rich black should be used carefully.

Match paper and press

Switch between coated vs uncoated stocks to see paper absorbency and dry time impact, then adjust art before plating.

Use with the RGB to CMYK preview and color contrast checker to finalize colors.

Budget clearly

Record cost impact notes, attach them to your prepress checklist, and upload via the file uploader when ready.

Frequently asked questions

What is a safe total ink limit?

For offset printing on coated stock, a total ink limit of 320 to 340 percent is a common industry guideline, meaning the combined CMYK percentages across any single point should not exceed that value. Uncoated stocks typically use a lower limit of around 260 to 280 percent because the paper absorbs ink more readily. The ink coverage estimator flags areas that approach or exceed these thresholds so you can adjust artwork before sending to Cheap RUSH Printing.

When should I use rich black?

Rich black, typically built as 60C 40M 40Y 100K, is recommended for large solid fill areas such as full-bleed backgrounds, thick rules, and headline blocks on premium pieces. Using pure 100K black on large areas can look slightly gray compared to a rich black build. For small body text, thin rules, and fine details, pure 100K is the better choice because it eliminates registration issues that can cause colored fringing around small characters on press.

Do coatings change coverage?

Laminate and UV coatings are applied after printing and do not change the ink coverage values in the file. However, coated papers tend to hold ink more cleanly on the surface, which can make solid fills appear richer and more saturated compared to the same file printed on uncoated stock. The ink coverage estimator lets you switch between coated and uncoated settings so you can compare expected results before committing to a paper choice at Cheap RUSH Printing.

Does coverage affect cost?

Yes, heavier ink coverage increases ink consumption per sheet and can slow press speed or extend dry time, particularly on large format pieces or thick uncoated stocks. Some printers factor high coverage into their pricing, especially for offset runs. The ink coverage estimator helps you identify coverage-heavy areas so you can evaluate whether simplifying the design or reducing solid fill size would meaningfully lower cost on your Cheap RUSH Printing order.

Can your team do this for me instead of using the online tool?

Yes. The browser tool is free and private, but if you would rather not rely on it alone, upload your files via our complimentary file uploader and request Human + AI help with “Ink Coverage”. Our prepress team will review manually — with AI assistance — and reply for free.
